Mount Damavand is an excellent symmetrical cone shaped volcano like Mount Fuji in Japan. In similarity it looks like the twin brother of Fujiyama but in size it is much bigger! Damwand height is 5,671 m (18,605 ft) and Fuji San is just 3,776 m (12,389 ft). Damavand Volcano.

Damavand is the highest peak in the Middle Eastern region and is located only 80 km northeast of Tehran, an easy access from a mega city. There are many Mythological tales associated with this mountain. But in reality it is a magnificent dormant volcano that emits powerful sulphuric smoke (since 2007), strong enough to kill unlucky stray animals.


Most mountaineers start their trek to Damavand summit from the comfortable Polour Camp altitude 2270m (7400 ft). Polour complex mountaineering resort was built in Polour Village by the Iran Mountaineering Federation in 2001. It is situated on the Sothern slops of the mountain near the Haraz Road. Haraz main road connects the capital Tehran to the Caspian Sea. Polour village is a shortcut to Damawand and the best place to acclimatise before attempting the classic south route or the west route of the mountain.

Generally Damavand Climbing Season is from mid June to mid September. But more experienced mountaineers may attempt the mountain from mid May to mid October. Damawand image is one of the most respectable icons in Iran, the same as the Fujiyama image in Japan, it appearing on Iranian money 10,000 Rls (1,000 Tomans) notes, on bottles of mineral spring waters and many commercial items.

Damavand Camp

Often referred to by several names, Damavand Camp is also known as the Damavand Base Camp, Damavand Camp II, or the second camping site of the mountain. Locally, it is called the Goosfand-Sara (گوسفند سرا ), which translates to "sheepfold," or the Saheb al-Zaman Mosque (مسجد صاحب الزمان ) campsite. This popular stop is a key location for hikers and mountaineers preparing for their ascent of Mount Damavand, offering basic amenities and a place to rest before tackling higher altitudes.

This Damavand Camp is the most popular and accessible starting point for trekking expeditions on Iran’s iconic Mount Damavand. Known for its simplicity and convenience, this base camp offers essential facilities, including a small mountain refuge, the Saheb al-Zaman Mosque, and a traditional sheepfold. Situated at an elevation of 3,040 meters, with coordinates Latitude 35.9020° and Longitude 52.1094°, it serves as the primary launching spot for climbers tackling the mountain’s south route, particularly during the summer season. As the key base camp, it provides an ideal resting place before embarking on the ascent of Damavand’s towering slopes.
