Warnings for Trekking and Skitouring Mt Damavand

In any hiking trekking program the safety of your team is the main priority. Here you can find some necessary tips to avoid the risks and enjoy your trek and increase your chance of success.

Base Camp Warning

For a successful climb it is essential to have a proper and trusty place for your accommodation. We recommend to use only Iran Mountaineering & Sport Climbing Federation campsites. These resorts are the safest, the cheapest and the best resting place.

Recommended

It is highly recommended to use Iran Mountaineering Federation camps and huts in the area such as: Camp1 Polour Hut and Camp3 Bargah Sevom New Hut.

Not Recommended

Do not use any unidentified local guest hose, local home or hostel in the cities and villages around the mountain. Also not recommended to use Camp1 Reyneh Hut, Camp2 Base (Goosfand Sara Old Shelter or the Mosque) and Camp3 Bargah Sevom Old Refuge.

Important Note
There are few bad and corrupt local guys who make some problems for foreign mountaineers in summer. These guy are usually wandering around Camp1 Reyneh and specially Camp2 Base (Goosfand Sara). They impersonate to offer you services such as guest house, food, hostel, car, mule, hot spring … Remember they are not mountaineers, just local people which come from the nearby town and villages, mainly from Reyneh.

If you use their services or accept their invitations, you could be in some sort of problem. Mostly they have business cards, the trick is to give you a business card, later they claim that you have accepted their invitation to their home or guest house or you have done an order for some service and they have done some preparation for you, so they force you to use their services or pay them some money?!

How to Get Rid of Them

The local bad guys would find you and come to you very quickly in the area! To encounter the least possible problem made by these people, remember "No Thank You." is usually a proper answer to many of their questions.

- Try to keep away from them as much as you can.
- Do not talk to them, or if you have to speak to them, make your discussion very short.
- Do not accept their invitations to go to their home or guest house.
- Do not promise or give them any kind of order to use any services such as car, food and so on.
- Do not accept their business cards.

More Tips

- While mountaineering around Damavand, if you have any question, try to find and ask your question to an English speaking mountaineer and not a local person.

- If you travel from the capital city Tehran, the safest and the most reliable starting point either for the West or for the classic South route of Damavand is Camp1 Polour Hut.

- During summer and peak season for climbing, most mountain camps and huts such as Camp3 Bargah Sevom old shelter and Camp3 New Hut shared saloon are crowded and too noisy, so for your comfort and privacy and to enjoy your hike it is much better to use a tent (not around camp2), or book and use a private rooms in the Camp3 New Hut.

Camp Reservation and Booking

Unfortunately in summer, there is not an easy or a proper way to book the huts in advance in the high season, either by email or telephone, specially for the Camp1 Polour Hut and Camp3 New Hut private rooms. It is only possible to do it by good connections just a couple of days in advance!!!

About Camp2 Base (Goosfand Sara)
Camp2 Base Goosfand Sara also called the Mosque is the worst campsite in the area. We do not advise to use it in summer at all, because it is too crowded, dirty, noisy and most important thing because it is invaded by some bad local guys which could make some problem for foreign mountaineers.

Permit Warning

Warning to Foreign Climbers
Iran Mount Climbing Federation asks all foreign climbers who intend to climb Damavand to pay 50 USD per person as permit fee to its representative and take a ticket.

Please do not try to cheat the permit fee by going through unidentified ways and by-passing the unusual routes because, unfortunately, the representive is impolite and may try to take the fee by immoral ways.

On behalf of Iranian Mountain Climbing Society, we are very sorry and ashamed of this kind of catchpoll and we condemn such behaver to foreign climbers by Iran Mount Climbing Federation. What a shame!!
