Warning to Mount Damavand climbers
Warning 1- to all foreign climbers:
Please be advised it is not recommended to use any unidentified place as your resting place either in the mountain or in the city-villages near the mountain. The safest , the cheapest , and the best resting place for you are Iranian Mountaineering Federation Camps . If you need a reliable and trusty resting place when you travel from Tehran to Mt.Damavand I recommend you to use these camps ONLY :
1- Iran Mountain Federation Polour Camp at polour village near Haraz Road .
2- Iran Mountain Federation Base Camp 3040m
Also known as Goosfand Sara Camp , the Mosque or your tent .
Some local guy may come to you in this area and invite you to his home -as guest house or resting places- you better refuse their invitation .
3- Iran Mountain Federation Bargah Sevom Camp - 4220m
you can use shelter , tent or whatever you like with no problem.

Iran Mount Climbing Federation asks all foreign climbers who use south face route to pay 50 USD per person as permit fee to its representative and take a ticket. Please do not try to cheat the permit fee by going other ways and by-passing the unusual route because, unfortunately, this representive is very impolite and may try to take the fee by immoral ways. On behalf of Iranian Mountain Climbing Society, we are very sorry and ashamed of this kind of absurd catchpoll and we condemn such behaver to foreign climbers by representive of Iran Mount Climbing Federation . What a shame!!
Warning 3- to all climbers:
Mount Damavand weather looks good most of the time in summer , but it could change very rapidly and you may not have enough time or energy to find a suitable shelter. So please have sufficient cloths and equipments with yourself even during a good weather to save your life in case of emergency .
Unfortunately 2 Iranian climbers lost their lives this summer ( 2007 ) because of this unpredictable weather.
Climbing can kill you !
High Altitude Mountaineering, such as climbing Mount Damavand and other high peaks are dangerous activities, where people die every year. Frankly we cannot think of any more dangerous sport activity on earth! Some climbers appear not to understand the risks, or do not take them seriously. "It just happens to people who make mistakes." There are so many ways one can die on mountain. In 2002 Babu Chiri Sherpa, probably the strongest Everest climber ever, died simply by stepping in the wrong place and falling into a crevasse.
Weather
The weather on Mount Damavand arguably has caused more deaths than any other factor besides bad judgment by climbers. Some climbers appear to rely on weather forecast reports or none at all. Some commercial expeditions use the costly Bracknell reports. The Bracknell reports have proved reliable for these commercial expeditions on damavand, but one should note they are forecasts too, and one day their forecast will probably be wrong too.
Judgment
Some climbers may be in problem on Damavand because they are too slow on Summit day and are late to the Summit. That statement does not sounds good, but frankly is true. Many of these climbers are caught in afternoon storms on the way down. Were their weather forecasts wrong?
Falls and Avalanches
Continue to cause death on mountains, and probably always will. Mountaineering are going well in Iran and the world, as you can see.... But everyone has their own risk level. What is your risk level?
More people will die in the city in car accidents, many by caused by drunks or crimes, many will die due to terror. But is mountain safe? Everyone has to make their own judgment on the risks they are willing to take. The dastardly and barbaric killing of those in terrorist and horrible acts recently , that cannot be justified for any reasons. These acts have hurt the world greatly. What a shame.
Mountaineering is an extremely high risk activity where people die every year. The RISKS are high. Traveling is a risk even to grandmother's house... When traveling, we feel you have to judge for yourself based on your level of risk you are willing to take.
One of the main aims of this topic is to help make climbers aware of mount climbing dangers. That's why they insist on a certain level of mountaineering experience as a requirement for joining a mount damavand climb. It is simply not possible to know what its like to be on Everest unless you're been to high altitude before, and many people attempting Everest haven't been above 6000 meters. Just because you can run 100 meters doesn't mean you know what's like to run a marathon; the only thing that's the same is some of the equipment - beyond that, its a whole new game. Whether we are successful in getting this message across will be measured by future statistics, but with the way things are at the moment, it is only a matter of time before we see another accident.
